We are all different but we walk all together

Osnovna škola Glina from September, 2019 untill August, 2022 will participate in a Erasmus+ project "We are all different but we walk all together". In this project our school will work with 2 more primary schools from Spain and Portugal.

The main goal of this project is the need to expand teaching methodology with new aspects that develop inclusiveness in the classroom and develop internationalization actions. The objectives of the project are to promote inclusive education by reinforcing the European dimension of teaching; to enhance knowledge of the history and cultural heritage of other countries in order to value and respect it and to reinforce the methodology of each participating school by introducing innovative aspects that improve the teaching - learning processes. The methodology will be based on learning how to learn and it is focused on the students. They will develop tasks of cooperative and collaborative work through relevant topics and research work will be carried out.

All the students from the three schools will take part in the activities programmed for the two project years and will benefit from this experience which will be coordinated virtually through the eTwinning platform. One of the activities that serves as a logbook for the students is the "Travel Diary" where all the experiences and learnings will be collected. Small number of students from each school will participate in the mobilities to Spain and Portugal and students from both countires will visit our school.

This partnership represents a great personal enrichment for all participants and an exchange of knowledge with other educational realities thus promoting inclusive education to reinforce the European dimension of teaching and learning. By acquiring knowledge of the history and cultural heritage from other countries, in order to value and respect it, we are promoting the development of key competences in a globalised way and through a unique experience. By participating in this experience we are forming our students as European citizens, who think in a European way, who value and respect the linguistic and cultural diversity of different countries in an experiential way.

Flexible learning spaces

Flexible learning spaces can be especially helpful in ensuring this link between classroom environments and instructors’ pedagogical goals. Research shows that the physical environment can have a significant impact on teaching and learning. It’s important to remember that people, both students and instructors, share a need for spaces that are coherent, legible, and consistent, and that spaces experienced as such can support a number of positive outcomes. Flexible learning spaces is a student focused approach to teaching a unit of work. The learning space is divided into smaller task focused spaces that relate directly to the learning behaviours student should display when working in each area. Flexible learning spaces are thus important resources to consider–and engage–as teaching and learning shifts to new spaces in schools.

PROJECT ACTIVITY

What do we have in common?

Using flexible learning space and ICT technology students were introduced to the activity.

At the beginning of the activity, students should select two areas in which they think that Spain, Portugal and Croatia have something in common through the activity Storm of ideas. They write the proposals on two pieces of paper that are placed on the board. From all the suggestions, the students together choose the ones that are most interesting to them. Depending on the number of selected topics, the same number of groups is formed.

According to their wishes and interests, students are divided into groups so that each group has an equal number of members. Students work on the topic independently using all available materials. The goal of the activity is for the students to independently design and produce something to present the topic they were given to other students.

The final product can be a poster, a presentation if it is for a shorter period, but it can also be a video work, a theater performance, etc. if it is a longer duration activity.

The essence of the activity is the independent work of students, encouraging creativity, freedom of expression, collaborative work and learning.
